10th YSF Annual Research Symposium of the Young Scientists Forum (YSF)

The Young Scientists Forum (YSF) of Sri Lanka is hosted by the National Science & Technology Commission (NASTEC) as a one of the consultative fora of the institute. The YSF Research Symposium which was initiated in year 2012 has become a popular event with the main objective of providing a platform for young scientists to promote collaborative research by sharing research findings and research interests in different fields while creating a space for networking and techno entrepreneurship development.

NASTEC has organized its 10th YSF Research Symposium on 18th March 2022 from 9.00 a.m. onwards as a virtual event via Zoom Video Conference facility.

The symposium was initiated with an Inauguration Ceremony with the participation of large number of guests in a virtual platform and Mr. Jayantha De Silva, Secretary to the State Ministry of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development, addressed the gathering as the Guest of Honor. Prof. Neelika Malavige, Professor and Head, Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, University of Sri Jayewardenapura, delivered the Keynote Speech on “Impactful Research during an Economic Crisis” to the virtual gathering.

A Chapter E-book under the title ENVIRONMENT SUSTENANCE AND FOOD SAFETY: NEED OF MORE VIBRANT POLICY INITIATIVES FOR SRI LANKA was also launched at the inauguration ceremony as the 1st thematic e-publication by YSF along with the E-Proceedings of the 10th YSF Symposium.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the symposium, both Extended Abstracts (EA) and Full Papers (FP) were accepted. In response to the call for research papers, NASTEC received 80 research papers consisting of 57 Extended Abstracts (EA) and 23 Full Papers (FP) related to the 10 thrust areas identified in the National Research & Development Framework (NRDF) which include Health, Food, Nutrition & Agriculture, Environment, Water, Energy, Shelter, Mineral Resources, Information Communication Technology & Knowledge Services, Basic Sciences, and Emerging Technologies & Indigenous Knowledge. Each paper was evaluated by two Senior Scientists on a double-blind review process and 56 papers including 39 Extended Abstracts (EA) and 17 Full Papers (FP) were selected to be presented at the symposium via virtual platform in five parallel sessions. Selected papers were published in the E-Proceedings of the symposium.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2022 of the YSF was also held on 18th March 2022 and a new 13 member steering committee for YSF for year 2022 was elected to coordinate future YSF activities.
