12th YSF Annual Research Symposium 2024 of the Young Scientists Forum (YSF)

The Young Scientists Forum (YSF) of Sri Lanka is hosted by the National Science & Technology Commission (NASTEC) as a consultative forum of the institute. The YSF Research Symposium which was initiated in year 2012 has become a popular event with the main objective of providing a platform for young scientists to promote collaborative research by sharing research findings and research interests in different fields while creating a space for networking and techno entrepreneurship development.

NASTEC has organized its 12th YSF Research Symposium on 26th January 2024 from 9.00 a.m. onwards as a virtual event via Zoom Video Conference facility.

The symposium was initiated with an Inauguration Ceremony with the participation of large number of guests in a virtual platform and Prof. Veranja Karunaratne, Chairperson of NASTEC and Ms. Geethani Kannangara, Acting Director of NASTEC welcomed the gathering. Dr. Asanka Sanjeewa, Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, delivered the Keynote Speech on "Dos and Don'ts: Guidelines for Young Scientists to Succeed in Their Careers", to the virtual gathering.

A Thematic Chapter E-book under the title “Climatic changes, impacts, vulnerability, mitigation and adaptations; Sri Lankan perspective” was launched at the inauguration ceremony as the 3rd thematic e-publication by YSF along with the E-Proceedings of the 12th YSF Symposium.

In response to the call for research papers, NASTEC received 72 research papers consisting of 47 Extended Abstracts (EA) and 25 Full Papers (FP) related to 7 themes including (1) Advances in Engineering, Science and Technology; (2) Economics, Finance and Management; (3) Energy, Environment and Natural Resources; (4) Food, Nutrition and Agriculture; (5) Frontiers in Computing and Information Sciences; (6) Innovations in Teaching and Learning; and (7) Modern Healthcare and Traditional Healing Practices. Each paper was evaluated by two Senior Scientists on a double-blind review process and 53 papers including 38 Extended Abstracts (EA) and 15 Full Papers (FP) were selected to be presented at the symposium via virtual platform in five parallel sessions. The 50 research presented online were published in extended abstract and full paper format in the E-Proceedings of the symposium.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the YSF was also held on 26th January 2024 and a new 13 member steering committee for YSF for year 2024 was elected to coordinate future YSF activities.
